The Kirby Center prides itself on ‘living our mission’. Arts access and education is the core of our mission, fostering an appreciation for the performing arts for our children and underserved.

Your support enables us to …….

  • Young People’s Theater Series. Through this program, the Kirby Center has been offering affordable tickets to children’s theater performances for 25 years. The ability for children to attend with teachers and classes, receiving educational booklets for use in academic curricula, makes this program unique. Each year, a minimum of 6,000 children experience live performing arts, often for the first time.
  • Community Outreach. The Kirby is proud of our partnerships with local nonprofit organizations who serve the less fortunate members of our community. Luzerne county Headstart, Victim’s Resource Center, Catholic Social Services, are some of the organizations with whom we partner to ensure they receive the opportunity to experience the cultural arts. The Kirby Center distributes an average of 1500 free tickets to social services groups each year, and personally meets with their representatives to ensure we are doing all we can to make their experiences at the Kirby positive.
  • Master Classes. Taking advantage of the highly trained and professional artists who visit our region to perform at the Kirby Center, we provide the opportunity for free lessons with professionals in the fields of ballet, dance and music. Individual training and group classes are provided for interested children who also receive the opportunity to participate in public performances.
  • Teacher Arts Training.  In this program educators are trained to integrate the arts into multi-disciplinary curricula. Teachers are invited to the Kirby Center to participate in a state-accredited training lecture/workshop. The course results in teachers earning continuing education credits accepted by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Participants are then invited to attend the performance for free, rounding out a informative day of cultural education.
  • Artist Outreach. When groups or individuals are unable to physically attend performances at the Kirby Center, we bring the Kirby Center to them! Working with our artists, we develop customized programs to take to schools, businesses, or hospitals. Artists often provide educational workshops or interactive lectures, followed by a very special personalized performance at the venue
  • Random Acts of Culture. Following the model of artist outreach, the Kirby takes performances directly into the community in this innovative new program which fosters our mission to improve community access to the arts. The Kirby works with local performing artists and organizations, forming partnerships to bring the cultural arts into the public eye.
  • Kirby Center Signature Series
  • The avenue to improve access for the cultural arts is through this series, which includes  touring artists in the fields of opera, Shakespeare, Broadway, modern dance, ballet, and straight theater. Annually the Kirby Center ensures we continue providing these opportunities for our community, for value of education and inspiration.
