As a composer, singer-songwriter, electric guitarist, record producer and film director, Frank Zappa’s incredible career spanned more than 30 years. During that time, he wrote rock, jazz and orchestral works. He also directed feature-length films and music videos, designed album covers and produced almost all of the more than 60 albums he released with the band The Mothers of Invention and as a solo artist.
In 1993, Zappa succumbed to cancer at the young age of 52. In 2011, Rolling Stone magazine ranked him No. 22 on their list of The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. In 2012, his life’s work will be re-introduced to the world by his son, Dweezil.
The younger Zappa has cocooned himself away in the studio engineering his own metamorphosis, and the result is a full-fledged tour honoring his father’s music and memory. Joining Dweezil will be a seven-piece back-up band, including Scheila Gonzalez, Jamie Kime and five other ace musicians.
Zappa's music should live on, at least on record, for years to come. Thanks to Zappa Plays Zappa, however, it also lives on at concerts. Hearing this music performed by living musicians, who devote countless hours to getting it absolutely right, is perhaps the best tribute Zappa could have hoped to receive.
